Be prudent in facing the spread of Shia

KUANTAN -- A prudent and unobtrusive approach should be implemented in facing the spread of Shia teachings, says the Regent of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.   He said although the Shia teachings differed from that of Sunnah Wal Jamaah which is professed by the majority of Muslims in Malaysia, the issue should be addressed without provoking any ill sentiments.   "We, who practice the teachings of Sunnah Wal Jamaah (Sunni) should be good examples to those who practice Shiism, and they (Shias) should also understand the will of the majority of Muslims here.   "I hope we do not get upset, or be easily provoked or quick to judge. About 840,000 illegal immigrants surrenders for deportation

PUTRAJAYA -- About 840,000 illegal immigrants have surrendered voluntarily for deportation to their countries of origin under the 3+1 amnesty programme, since its inception in 2014.  Immigration Department director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali said in the same period, a total of RM400 million in compounds had also been collected.  Speaking at press conference here today, he said this year alone, a total of 148,774 illegal immigrants had surrendered themselves under the programme.  Mustafar said in order to ensure smooth running of the 3+1 programme which would expire on Aug 30, Immigration service counters nationwide would operate on weekends this month from 8 am to 5 pm.  As such, he urged illegal immigrants to make the most of the remaining days of the programme.  "In conjunction with the National Day on Aug 31, we will carry out efforts to liberate Malaysia from illegal immigrants," he said adding that a total of 8,694 operations had been conducted nation

Malaysia to benefit from the trade war between China and the US

Sungai Kandis by-election in photos

SHAH ALAM – A total of 19 polling stations, involving 109 streams, in the Sungai Kandis state constituency, opened at 8 am today to enable 51,217 voters to exercise their right. The polling centres, using 18 schools and a community hall, will close at 5.30 pm. There is no early voter in the Sungai Kandis by-election. The Election Commission (EC) is targetting 80 per cent voter turnout in the by-election and the results are expected to be announced by about 10 pm. The tallying of votes will be done at Dewan Besar Tanjung of the Shah Alam City Council in Section 9 here, as soon as the balloting process ends at 5.30 pm.

Tuaran district declares as a bird flu outbreak area

KOTA KINABALU -- The Sabah government has instructed the Veterinary Services Department to declare Tuaran district as a bird flu outbreak area. The instruction was conveyed through the Tuaran District Officer, said Sabah Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Junz Wong. He said a surveillance by the Sabah Veterinary Services Department on several farms and based on samples tested last Tuesday found that a farm in Tuaran recorded positive results for Avian Influenza. Bernama reported, as a measure to contain the disease, the Veterinary Services Department will cull all poultry within a one-kilometre radius of the area where the disease was detected. The area of culling will be extended up to five-kilometre radius if surveillance finds positive samples in the one-kilometre radius area. IPOH -- The Perak Menteri Besar's official residence here may be put up for sale as it is no longer suitable to be occupied, said Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu. Former TV3 newscaster cheat death after house catches fire

SHAH ALAM, -- A former TV3 newscaster and his son cheated death when fire broke out at their house this afternoon. Shah Alam district police chief ACP Baharuddin Mat Taib said in the 4.06pm incident at Jalan Landak, Seksyen 20 here, the victims, Nasharuddin Tajuddin, 57 and his 21-year-old son managed to escape through the back door. The police received an emergency call from an individual informing the authority that his neighbour's house had caught fire. Upon our arrival at the scene, we found three fire engines with the strength of 30 firemen have already arrived and successfully put out the fire, he said in a statement. Baharuddin said the initial investigation found that fire was believed to have started from the front part of the house, probably due to the air-conditioning unit or the victim's vehicles. The fire had destroyed parts of the house and the victims' two vehicles but no injuries reported.

50 thousands will make a choices between UMNO and PKR today

SHAH ALAM -- A total of 51,217 voters will cast their ballots in the Sungai Kandis state by-election tomorrow.   Altogether, 19 polling stations with 109 streams will be open from 8 am to 5.30 pm.   According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, rain is expected in the morning with the temperature hovering between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius while, in the evening, fine weather is forecast with the temperature of between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius.   The Election Commission (EC) has made several improvements for the by-election, including setting up two polling streams for voters aged 60 and above and adding more polling streams at stations with a large number of voters.   A total of 21 new streams have been established to avoid too many voters at a stream at any one lane, making it a total of 109 streams compared to 88 during the 14th general election (GE14) on May 9.   The EC has also extended the polling hours by 30 minutes, from 8 am to 5.30 pm, instead of closi
