KUALA LUMPUR -- The wish of a businessman, who claims to be a 'Datuk Seri', to settle the case of assaulting and causing grievous hurt to three members of the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) by offering compensation was dashed when all the victims rejected the offer.
The matter was conveyed by lawyer Datuk Rajpal Singh, representing the accused Liow Soon Hee, 29, during the case remention proceeding at the Ampang Magistrate's Court.
“We have written a representation on whether they (the three victims) are willing to accept compensation for all the charges, but we received a reply that they are not interested in any offers and that the reply has also been sent to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC),” he said before Magistrate Mohamad Firdaus Sadina Ali.
A legal observer for Rela, Datuk Michael Wong then told the court that the three victims had been interviewed by Rela director-general on the offer and confirmed that they had considered and rejected the offer.
Therefore, Mohamad Firdaus said the court would proceed with the trial which will begin on September 5.
On July 31, Liow through his lawyer sent a representation to Rela director-general, Zulkifli Abidin on compensation offered to the three victims. Before that, he had also sent a representation to the AGC to drop the case, but was denied.
Deputy public prosecutor Norhashimah Hashim appeared for the prosecution.
Meanwhile, when met by reporters outside the courtroom, Zulkifli said the decision to reject the unspecified amount of compensation was because this involved the dignity of Rela enforcement personnel.
“This involves the dignity of our men, we do not want our personnel to be seen as easily bribed or an offender to think that he can get away with just by paying us money. We do not want to give the ‘wrong signal’ to the public,” he said, Bernama reported
He also hoped that the case could be a lesson to the public to respect the enforcement officers in the country.
On Nov 3 last year, Liow pleaded not guilty to four counts of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to three Rela members and using criminal force to deter the public servants from discharging their duties at the Kou Ong Yah Temple, in Jalan Merdeka, Kampung Baru Ampang, here at 6.30 am on Oct 27, 2017.
He was alleged to have committed the offence against Rela members Lee Weng Poh, 27, Melvin Cheong Mun Khai, 21, and Leong Jun Jie, 21.
Liow was charged under Section 325 and 353 of the Penal Code which provide an imprisonment for up to seven years and may be liable to a fine, upon conviction.
