Chairmanship of the PAC is a new milestone fo Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR — Reserving the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee for the opposition marks a new milestone for Malaysia, said newly-appointed chairman of the PAC, Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee.
The Beluran MP from the Barisan Nasional, who was also formerly Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker, hailed the progressive move taken by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government in view of its responsibility to act as watchdog of financial management and procedures of the current government,  but also of the previous government, if needed.
“I also wish to stress that the PAC is a guardian of the public’s money and thus it is very important that  Parliament’s integrity is always preserved based on the concept of the separation of powers,” he said in a statement, Bernama report.
He added that he would also be discussing with the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat to look into the possibility of opening PAC hearings to the public.
The Dewan Rakyat today agreed to the selection of Kiandee and Ipoh Timur MP Wong Kah Woh from  DAP as chairman and deputy chairman of the  PAC for the 14th Parliament
Reserving the chairman post for an opposition MP was among the pledges in Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto for the 14th general election.
Meanwhile, Wong said the PAC needed to regain its credibility as the previous one was seen as rather impotent especially in dealing with the 1MDB scandal.
He did not dismiss the possibility of the new PAC reopening its probe into the scandal.
He added the committee would also be looking into existing legislation towards ensuring whistleblowers or witnesses before the committee are protected.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said the party welcomed the appointment of Kiandee as the chairman of the PAC.
He said the party would also be nominating one of its MPs to be on the panel (of the PAC).
In IPOH, Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Nga Kor Ming said he was disappointed that Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had rejected the prestigious PAC chairman’s post.
“It plays a very important role in check and balance but I leave it to the people to judge as to why he (Ahmad Zahid) did not seize the opportunity,” said the MP for Teluk Intan and assemblyman for Aulong.
