BALAKONG -- An all-rounder and one who is capable of serving the constituents are the criteria that will be used by voters in the Balakong by-election to decide on the choice of their elected representative when they go to the polls this Sept 8.
From observation by Bernama, majority of the constituents want an elected representative who is efficient and capable of resolving their problems, no matter which political parties they are affiliated with.
They have this in mind because Balakong, although it is very near the federal capital of Kuala Lumpur, is plagued with problems such as flash floods, dengue and poorly-maintained roads.
Kampung Baru Balakong Development and Security Committee chairman Aw Fui Koon (she), 50, said flash floods had become a norm for residents in Balakong during the rainy season.
"Most affected are traders, including at the morning market and also food shops, as they have to move their goods and belongings to higher ground and this affects their business.
“The potholes on the roads is another problem as accidents happen often, especially involving motorcycles and pedestrians.
"We really hope that the new elected representative can continue with what was done by the late Eddie Ng before, like in developing the flood mitigation project at Sungai Balak to overcome flash floods and also improving the road condition," she said when met by Bernama.
Housewife Yong Chiew Ping, 51, from Taman Damai Impian, Cheras,, hoped that the new elected representative could resolve the issue on infrastructure facilities and security aspects in residential areas in the constituency.
She cited a recent case where several vehicles, including hers, were damaged by fallen trees.
According to her, the trees were planted by the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj).
“We do not know where to go to complain because MPKj can’t be bothered with our complaints. So, we want an elected representative who can resolve problems efficiently, to act fast when there is a complaint,” she added.
Another housewife, Michelle Yu, 43, from Kampung Baharu Sungai Chua, said an elected representative should always go to the ground to meet the constituents to better understand problems facing the local community.
Cafe owner, Rocky Lee, 29, from Kampung Baharu Batu 11, Cheras, said an elected representative should place the welfare of the constituents foremost.
“If the person is a local, it will be more easier to get things done and implemented.,” he added.
According to the Election Commission (EC), Balakong has 62,219 voters, with 61.07 per cent of them Chinese, followed by Malay (29.25 per cent), Indian (8.79 per cent) and other races (0.79 per cent).
The Balakang constituency covers Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, Kampung Baharu Balakong, Kampung Baharu Batu 11, Cheras, Cheras Jaya, Taming Jaya and Simpang Balak.
This by-election for the Balakong state seat will witness a straight fight between Pakatan Harapan candidate Wong Siew Ki, 32, who is also Selangor DAP Wanita deputy secretary and MCA candidate, Tan Chee Teong, 40.
The by-election was called following the death of incumbent assemblyman Eddie Ng Tien Chie, of DAP, in a road accident last July 20.
In the last general election, Ng defeated Barisan Nasional’s Lim Chin Wah and Mohamad Ibrahim Ghazali, from PAS, with a majority of 35,538 votes.
