KUALA LUMPUR -- DAP has picked Subang Jaya Municipal Councillor Wong Siew Ki to defend its Balakong state seat in the by-election scheduled on Sept 8.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said Wong, 32, was selected among others for her contributions and efforts at grassroots level.
“She has the experience and we want to feature a woman candidate to give opportunity to the gender group. In fact, we took the recommendation of Selangor DAP,” he told a media conference at DAP headquarters, Bernama reported.
The by-election was called following the death of incumbent Eddie Ng in a car accident on July 20.
In the 14th general election (GE14), Ng who contested on DAP ticket, defeated Barisan Nasional's Lim Chin Wah and Mohamad Ibrahim Ghazali (PAS) with a 35,538 vote majority.
Lim also announced that DAP would be contesting under Pakatan Harapan logo in the by-election.
Meanwhile, Wong who has been serving MPSJ since 2016 said she would be terminating her service before nomination day this Saturday.
She said she would continue the efforts of Ng to improve the wellbeing of residents in the state constituency.
“I will go down to the ground more often to monitor each residential area in Balakong to raise the quality of life of the people in the constituency.
“I hope I will not disappoint supporters of Ng and the voters here. The late Ng had done well and it is not easy to match his performance,” she said.
