I dont want this dewan to be a circus - Sultan of Johor

JOHOR BAHRU – Johore State Assemblyman were reminded that they must  observe etiquette and rules during State Assembly proceedings.

The Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar in stressing the importance of acting with decorum during sittings, added that every assemblyman should listen to the opinions of others.

They should not reject such views just because they were not in line with an assemblyman’s political beliefs or interests, he added.

"I do not want this ‘dewan’ (the Johore State Assembly) to be a 'circus'. I hope the Speaker will carry out his duties effectively to ensure the proceedings are orderly and conform to rules.

"If there are members of the house who violate rules, then instruct them to leave" he said during  the Opening of the first term of first session of the 14th Johor State Assembly at the Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim here.

Also present were Tunku Temenggong Johor Tunku Idris Iskandar Sultan Ibrahim and Tunku Panglima Johor Tunku Abdul Rahman Sultan Ibrahim.

Sultan Ibrahim added that as the Johor Ruler, he would monitor the state government by offering advice and views to the Menteri Besar.

He added he also wanted to emphasise  the importance of prudent financial management so that the state controlled its expenditure without exceeding the revenue received.

The Johor Sultan also reminded the state government to be cautious when making decisions and not to be  influenced by outsiders who did not know the history and the ways of the Johor state administration.

"Read and understand every item contained in the Johor State Constitution 1895, which has been the basis of the formation and progress of the state until today," he said.

He added that the 14th state assembly had created history because for the first time, there was a complete change in the state leadership as its members were from the Pakatan Harapan coalition.

He said that while there was a new leadership, its objective was to still see to the continued prosperity of the state and the well-being of the people of Johor.

"As such, any good programme carried out by the former administration should be maintained or improved, instead of being stopped," he said, while congratulating the assemblymen for being the new elected representatives.
