KUALA LUMPUR -- The trend of getting the support of the younger generation by sensationalising religious and racial issues is losing its draw, the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, said.
He said voters now placed more importance on good governance and there was a deficit of confidence due to the factors of corruption and abuse of power.
Sultan Nazrin Shah said voters also wanted governance which was anchored on laws and not on the charisma of an individual.
“The government which has been given the mandate to rule must read the sentiments of the voters accurately. Political parties which want to continue to exist must use the sentiments of the voters as a guide.
“The voters are more focused on good governance and transparency and less on sensational issues about religion and race, opening the opportunity for a political culture based on a common denominator,” he said, Bernama reported.
Sultan Nazrin Shah was speaking at the launch of the book ‘Reflections on Malaysian Unity and Other Challenges’ by the chairman of the Board of Trustees of Yayasan Perpaduan Malaysia, Dr Chandra Muzaffar, here.
He said the number of people who voted in the 14th General Election and the risks they took in changing the government as well as the peaceful and harmonious transfer of power showed that democracy was flourishing in the country.
Meanwhile, commenting on the book which also highlighted the national language, Sultan Nazrin Shah said Bahasa Malaysia was the lingua franca of the country and an integral part of ensuring unity among the people.
“Dr Chandra rues that many institutions and organisations have failed to use Bahasa Malaysia extensively, and hence, this has resulted in some Malaysians not developing a sense of ownership vis-à-vis the national language.
“In fact, he says that even the Malay elite need to be convinced that Bahasa Malaysia has the ability to bring our various communities together for the greater good,” said Sultan Nazrin Shah.
The book, which is sold at RM42 per copy, contains 11 chapters of articles written in response to issues and situations in Malaysia that had surfaced over a period of time.
