SHAH ALAM -- The voter turn-out for the Sungai Kandis by-election today was unofficially only 49.8 per cent, believed to be because voters had no mood to vote as they could still
feel the impact of the 14th General Election.

Election Commission Deputy Chairman Tan Sri Othman Mahmood said he was personally not satisfied with the percentage of voter turn-out as the original target was 80 per cent.

“The voting process went well, but I am not satisfied as the voter turn-out was low,” he told reporters at the vote counting centre in Section 19, Shah Alam.

He said the lowest recorded voter turn-out was during the Penanti by-election in Penang on May 31, 2009, at 46 per cent.

Meanwhile, a Selangor EC source told Bernama another factor which contributed to the low voter turn-out was the fact that many did not go back to the constituency to vote or were outside the area.

The by-election saw a three-cornered fight between PKR candidate Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, Datuk Lokman Noor Adam (BN) and K. Murthy (Independent).

The Sungai Kandis state seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei from lymphoma cancer on July 2.

Hujan lebat di Kelantan dijangka berlanjutan ke Januari

KOTA BHARU -- Jabatan Meteorologi Kelantan menjangkakan episod hujan lebat berkemungkinan akan berlanjutan ke bulan Januari tahun hadapan di negeri ini. Pengarahnya Rabiah Zakaria berkata ia berikutan Kelantan masih dipengaruhi Monsun Timur Laut pada bulan berkenaan. "Jabatan Meteorologi Malaysia sebelum ini menjangkakan akan berlaku empat hingga enam episod hujan lebat sepanjang Monsun Timur Laut pada tahun ini dengan purata jumlah hujan antara 440 milimeter (mm) hingga 690mm bagi bulan Disember ini di Kelantan," katanya ketika dihubungi Bernama di sini, hari ini.
