ALOR SETAR -- Two men were killed when they were buried under piles of rubble in a bridge-collapse incident near Taman Serdang in Serdang last night.
Bandar Baharu district police chief DSP Barudin Wariso, in a brief statement, said the incident occurred about 10.15 pm and the victims were a motorcyclist and his pillion rider.
“However, their identities have yet to be ascertained,” he said, Bernama reported.
It is learnt that the victims were buried under the rubble, following which firemen from the Serdang Fire and Rescue Station had been mobilised to the scene.
The first victim was found at 12.15 am today and the second victim about five minutes later.
The bodies were then sent to Kulim Hospital for post mortem.
Meanwhile, Kedah Fire and Rescue Department, in a statement, said it received a distress call on the incident at 10.27 pm and 11 firemen from the Serdang Fire Station were mobilised to the scene.
"On arrival at the scene, they saw a Yamaha LC 135 motorcycle under the rubble of the bridge at a housing area and believed there were two victims involved,” he said, adding that a search was conducted by digging the area using hoes to recover the victims who were buried under about 0.3 metres of rubble.
The firemen managed to pull out the victims, both aged 17, who were then confirmed dead by health workers at the location.
