SHAH ALAM -- After 21 days of campaigning, 50,692 ordinary voters in Seri Setia and 62,160 others in Balakong are expected to cast their votes at their respective state by-elections Saturday.
The voting centres in both the Selangor state constituencies will open from 8am to 5.30pm. There will be 18 polling centres with 115 channels in Seri Setia, while Balakong will see 16 such centres with 129 channels.
The weather in Seri Setia is expected to be rainy in the morning and sunny in the evening while Balakong will be cloudy in the early part of the day and see clearer skies later, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department
Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Halimey Abu Bakar is facing Dr Halimah Ali from PAS in Seri Setia and in Balakong, the fight is between PH candidate Wong Siew Ki and Tan Chee Teong from the MCA.
Halimey, is scheduled to cast his vote at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Lindungan, Jalan PJS 10/11 Petaling Jaya, while Tan will vote at SJKC Pekan Batu 11, Balakong.
Both Dr Halimah and Wong are not registered voters in their constituencies.
The by-elections are being held in about four months after the 14th General Election (GE 14) after the seats fell vacant following the deaths of incumbents Prof Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin (Seri Setia) and Eddie Ng Tien Chee (Balakong). Shaharuddin died of colon cancer on Aug 2, while Ng died in a road accident on July 20.
Seri Setia has 53,492 registered voters and of the total, 50,692 are ordinary voters, 2,770 early voters and 30 absentee voters.
Of the 53,492 registered voters, 49.58 per cent were male voters and 50.42 per cent are female voters.
In terms of race composition, 54.02 per cent of the voters registered in the constituency are Malays, while 24.34 per cent comprise Indians and 19.75 per cent are Chinese, Bernama reported.
Meanwhile, the Balakong state constituency has 62,219 voters of whom 62,160 are ordinary voters, 31, early voters and 28 absentee voters.
Nearly 60.8 per cent of the voters in Balakong are Chinese, followed by Malays (29.3 per cent) and Indians (8.9 per cent). Others represent almost one percent of registered voters.
Early voting for military personnel, their spouses and police personnel was held on Sept 4.
The Election Commission (EC) is expecting 70 per cent voter turnout for both by-elections which involved an allocation of RM3.09 million.
The official ballot counting centre would be at the Civic Centre in Petaling Jaya for Seri Setia), and the Dewan Utama Demense at the Hulu Langat District and Land Office for Balakong.
The results are expected to be announced by 10 pm.
In GE14, Shaharuddin defeated his three challengers Datuk Yusoff HM Hanif from BN, Mohd Ghazali Daud (PAS) and independent candidate Dr S. Vignes with a majority of 19,372 votes.
Ng of the DAP contesting on the PKR ticket defeated his two opponents Lim Chin Wah from Barisan Nasional (BN) and Mohamad Ibrahim Ghazali (PAS), with a majority of 35,538 votes.
