PUTRAJAYA -- The Attorney General’s Chamber is urged not to consider prosecuting UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam’s brother, Azman Noor Adam for insulting Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
De facto Law Minister Datuk Liew Vui Keong said the case should not see the light of day as Dr Mahathir was not offended by whatever statements made against him.
“It reflects how magnanimous our Prime Minister is. As leaders of the country and government ministers, we’re subject to ridicules and criticisms by members of the public.
“The only caution is that any statement made against a political leader must not be defamatory as the law provides for recourse for legal action to be taken against the defamer. In fact, the law applies to everyone who has been defamed to take legal action,” he said.
Liew was responding to the recent detention of Azman after he had allegedly spread social media images which insulted Dr Mahathir.
Yesterday, Dr Mahathir expressed his disagreement towards the action taken against Azman as politicians must accept being criticized.
The prime minister said he has been called many names during his previous tenure as the prime minister and never took action against the perpetrators.
"I don't mind being insulted by anybody; it’s not going to affect me,” said the prime minister, Bernama report.
On Sedition Act, Liew said at this moment, the process of repealing the act is going through the committee stages of the relevant ministries.
“The cabinet paper will be submitted to the Cabinet soon for consideration,” he said.
He added that there are provisions in the existing Act that safeguard the Ruler of the Country namely the Yang Di Pertuan Agong from all forms of seditious attacks.
“As our Constitutional Monarch, we must respect and remain loyal to our King as enshrined in our Rukun Negara,” he said.
Liew went on saying Deputy Home Minister Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman is not too incorrect in his statement as the Sedition Act has not been repealed yet.
Earlier, Azis who is also Warisan's Sepanggar Member of Parliament said his earlier statement in regard to the issue does not mean he agrees with retaining the Act.
