KUALA LUMPUR -- The Royal Malaysian Police have busted 38 Love Scam syndicates with international network targeting lonely women as victims in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.
Bukit Aman Commercial CID director Datuk Seri Amar Singh Ishar Singh said the syndicates made Malaysia as its operation centre before swindling their victims with love messages.
He said police had conducted three operations in the country simultaneously to track down the mastermind of the syndicates.
Amar said based on intelligence operations, police crippled 38 syndicates in the country involving losses amounting to RM28 million masterminded by two Nigerian men and 16 locals as well a woman from China.
“In Hong Kong, the syndicate was involved in 100 cases with losses valued at RM54.6 million while in Singapore, there were eight cases causing losses amounting to RM1.3 million,” he told a press conference.
Amar said through integrated operations, authorities in Hong Kong nabbed 11 syndicate suspects in the country while Singapore authorities apprehended two in the republic.
In this regard, Amar said police were tracking down 39,743 mule accounts including women involved in cyber crime financial transactions.
According to him, one mule account on average could be involved in fraud for 10 times, Bernama report.
Mule accounts are individuals who allowed their bank accounts to be involved cyber cheating transactions.
