KUALA LUMPUR -- UMNO should have its own identity and be independent to be a credible opposition, and should not be in haste to establish co-operation with other parties, especially PAS.
Many thought UMNO, after losing at the 14th General Election (GE13), was seen as desperate to form an opposition pact with PAS, whilst the party's internal issues should rightly be a priority at the moment.
Political analyst Md Shukri Shuaib said, currently UMNO was seen as overly desperate to co-operate with PAS, in fact the 70-year-old party was successful tamed by PAS.
"UMNO should be more dominant as it is stronger than PAS in terms of the number of seats (in Parliament). I think there is no hope of an UMNO and PAS relations in the future.
"If viewed from the point of the support of PAS members for UMNO who are still unfriendly with UMNO, there is no profit for the party to hold a friendly relationship with PAS because it is proven that PAS is not a good coalition partner," said the senior lecturer of political and international affairs at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).
Md Shukri said the "disgusting" view of UMNO was still thick among PAS supporters and they still regarded UMNO as a tyrannical party and did meet the demands of Islam.
In the meantime, he said there was nothing wrong with UMNO's leadership joining a Pakatan Harapan (PH) component and be together with the government of today.
"With UMNO who have experience (being a government) and having its own supporters, I think this maybe can be discussed. When we talk about UMNO we don’t think about its leaders. Do not think about Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak (former president) and Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (current president). But we must think what is best for UMNO members and the people, "he said.
However, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Faculty of Social and Humanities’ Dean Prof Dr Mohd Fuad Mat Jali had a different view and believed that UMNO should work with PAS to make the opposition a dominant, strong and respected entity.
He said the cooperation between the two oppositions was necessary to ensure that the rights of the Rulers and the Malays enshrined in the Constitution continued to be championed.
"Now it can be seen that these things (the rights of the King and the Malays) are much broached and they and may be sensitive to the Malays. So this cooperation is very necessary, "he said.
Mohd Fuad said it was not impossible if UMNO and PAS managed to form a co-operation ahead of GE-15, as Pakatan Harapan did in GE-14.
Meanwhile, UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan explained that the cooperation of UMNO and PAS only involved matters that were mutually agreed upon such as in the by-elections and championing the people's problems.
"But it is important to remember that UMNO and PAS will only work together and not come together, "he said when met at the 2018 UMNO General Assembly, Bernama report.
Mohamad said the co-operation between the two parties would enable the country to have a powerful opposition bloc and could monitor the performance of the government today well.
The co-operation between UMNO and PAS was being raised comprehensively in the assembly since yesterday, including by the three party wings, namely, Wanita, Youth and Puteri movements, with the Youth movement being seen as less likely to support the co-operation.
UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said in his policy speech last night that UMNO would continue to work with the opposition such as PAS in the spirit of mutual co-operation, namely, the co-operation for mutual benefits, not tied but free in their own way.
