PUTRAJAYA -- Parents registering their newborn children with unique names that are not encouraged or recommended by the National Registration Department (NRD) should submit an application to the department.
Apart from submitting the application, parents must also state that they are consenting to name their children with the unique name, said the NRD in a statement today.
The department said that it categorised names that were not recommended into two categories – “objectionable” and “undesirable” names.
It described “objectionable” names such as titles, descent, meanings, initials or words which are obscene.
As for “unacceptable” names, they include the names of animals, fruits, instruments, letters of the alphabet, numbers or a combination of letters or numbers which may give an unacceptable meaning.
The NRD does not impose specific requirements in the naming of children by their parents.
Naming a child is for the parents to decide or the person who certifies the birth, the statement added.
Parents who want to name their child with an unsuitable name would be advised by the NRD, it said.
While the department received applications on the registration of names, it had so far never limited the number of characters, added the statement.
The registration of a name for the birth certificate will also be used in MyKad, it said, adding that the MyKad namespace is currently up to 80 characters in total.
However, if there are any individuals who have a name exceeding 80 characters, the individual can be issued a name confirmation card (KPN) as an endorsement of the name that is not printed on the MyKad.
