Six loggers trapped in jungle for 29 hours

KEMAMAN -- Two brothers went to work as loggers in the Cerul Forest Reserve in Terengganu with dreams of earning money enough to celebrate Christmas in their village.
Their dreams of celebrating the Yuletide in Lawas, Sarawak, were nearly dashed when they were among six people trapped for more than 29 hours in the jungle. Thankfully, they were rescued by firemen today.
William Anak Ligang, 37, his 33-year-old brother James and four other loggers found themselves trapped when their four-wheel drive vehicle broke down on the way back last night.
The other four saved by the Cheneh station Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department were Alister Sinawat Ukul, 23; Mohd Ghani Ismail, 38; Ab Sani Abd Khalid, 37 and Mohd Hariri Hasan, 37.
William said they had already booked their ticket home to Sarawak tomorrow and were on the verge of giving up hope when they had to travel by foot and cross several fast-flowing rivers, due to the monsoon, season to save themselves.
“Just imagine, we had to wait 10 hours for the waters to recede before we could cross the first river...it was the same with several other rivers, having to wait for the current to slow down before we could move on,” he said, adding that they would leave for the Kuala Lumpur International Airport by taxi tonight.
For Mohd Ghani, the experience of having to trek 53km on foot from the logging area and feeling hungry, thirsty and tired, tested their patience, Bernama reports.
"All kinds of thoughts were going through our minds, yet we stayed positive and were confident we would be saved.
“We had to drink dirty water at the foot of the hill and walked in hunger until we found a ‘kongsi’ house where we were provided with food and could make an emergency call to the fire brigade,” he said.
Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department Zone 2 head Azmi Ab Rahim said they received the call at 2pm today and sent nine personnel and one officer from the Cheneh station for the rescue mission.
“It took three hours to save the six loggers due to the current and floating logs in the rivers,” he said.
