Malaysia’s reserves at US$102.36 bln end-Feb 2019

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia’s reserves remained usable as at end-Feb 2019, with official reserve assets at US$102.36 billion, in accordance with the International Monetary Fund’s Special Data Dissemination Standard (IMF SDDS) format.

In a statement today, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) said other foreign currency assets amounted to US$653.8 million.

"For the next  12 months, the pre-determined short-term outflows of foreign currency loans, securities and deposits, which include among others, scheduled repayment of external borrowings by the government and repayment arising from maturity of the foreign currency Bank Negara Interbank Bills, amounted to US$4.03 billion.

"The short forward positions amounted to US$18.36 billion while long forward positions amounted to US$600 million as at end-February 2019, reflecting the management of ringgit liquidity in the money market,” it said.

In line with the practice adopted since April 2006, BNM said the data excludes projected foreign currency inflows arising from interest income and the drawdown of project loans amounting to US$2.70 billion in the next 12 months.

The bank said the only contingent short-term net drain on foreign currency assets are government guarantees of foreign currency debt due within one year, amounting to US$351.1 million.

"There are no foreign currency loans with embedded options, no undrawn, unconditional credit lines provided by or to other central banks, international organisations, banks and other financial institutions.

"BNM also does not engage in foreign currency options vis-à-vis ringgit," it added.

Sales and Marketing Vice-President Abdul Rashid Musa said the letter X is synonymous with crossover or SUV vehicles, while the number 70 denoted the size or class of the SUV and would enable Proton to adopt a logical system to add bigger or smaller models in the future. “This is the first time an alphanumerical naming system is used on a Proton model as our research shows it will make it easier to sell in ASEAN and other international markets, as there are no language barriers to overcome,” he told reporters at the preview of the new SUV. Proton Chief Executive Officer Dr Li Chunrong said Proton's adoption of the new naming system would make customer more focus on the brand name as compared with the model name. Abdul Rashid, who is also the Chief Executive Officer o...
